Ndeup | Tarantismo – A Performative Encounter

Developed by Alessio Trevisani and Patrick Acogny, this artistic research project explores the dialogue between Ndeup (Senegal) and Tarantismo (Italy) as embodied practices of healing, knowledge, and transformation. What is at stake is a mise en présence, not an extraction. Rather than treating these practices as folklore, the project considers the body in crisis — moved by invisible forces — and the ways such traditions reconfigure relationships between self, community, and the unseen. Developed with attention to their specific cultural and spiritual contexts, it does not seek comparison or fusion, but relation. At its core is a staged encounter between two dancers, Khady Sarr and Giada Palmisano, each rooted in one of these practices and active in contemporary dance. Within an open, neutral space, they do not reproduce rituals but engage through memory, presence, and embodied knowledge. The work unfolds as a structured yet nonchoreographed process, allowing listening, tension, and transformation to emerge. In cooperation with Accademia dell‘Arte (Arezzo).

Tarantella in Contemporary Dance

In this workshop, Giada Palmisano explores Tarantella within contemporary dance. Rooted in Southern Italian traditions, the healing dance practice engages rhythm, spirituality and embodied memory. Contemporary dance opens a space for exploration, awareness, and individual expression through movement.

This interactive performance lecture approaches the body as a living archive holding silenced histories, ancestral memories, and colonial traumas. In dancing with Frantz Fanon through body, mind, spirit, and heart, we engage with his decolonial psychology as a practice that transforms how we remember and relate. What does the body know that cannot be learned in universities? How do movement, creativity, and spirituality become practices of healing? And how does language carry both violence and the possibility of transformation? Drawing on decolonial ways of knowing, we challenge the binary opposition between body and mind, theory and practice, past and present. Through poetry, performance, and psychogeography, we invite the audience into a collective space where the body as an archive is activated, questioned, and reimagined.
